pub fare + zombies
pub fare and zombies? yep, that was our new year's eve!
ryan and wendy came over for a nye dinner of fish & chips. we set the ambiance by playing some kind of marathon zombie TV show in the background all. night. long.
partrick's bright idea was a project involving a giant pot of oil on our stove top, a huge thermometer, a vat of batter, hand-cut (duh) potatoes and some cod. it could have gone very, very, wrong ... but he pulled it off! the fish and chips were accompanied by pea puree and curried ketchup. yumma yumma.
there was also an amazing salad of spinach, celery root, apple and pine nuts tossed in a mustard vinaigrette to start. and to continue working backwards through the meal, we noshed on an assortment of amazing creamy cheeses (all pasteurized!) while we all helped in the kitchen.
as midnight rolled in, we could see the navy pier fireworks from our living room and we threw a 2011 penny off the balcony <- my corny idea of trying to symbolize bringing in a new year?
well anyway, maybe pub fare and zombies aren't such a bad combination afterall! it's 2012!!

fishy face
dwe went to the shedd aquarium during our winter break! piper loves herself some fishies, and is very good at making a fish face. i kept missing that photo op, howeve, but i'll get a pic of it someday. for now, here's her papa:
the shedd was just the chicago activity we needed on a chilly winter day. it was cold waiting in line (yes in line!) but we cozied up with warm drinks and coffee cake inside. it's a very nice aquarium! i grew up going to the monterey bay aquarium (never went to the long beach aquarium even though i lived in california when it opened), but kind of thought that all other aquariums had to be sub-par. i was wrong! and all three of us loved it.

there were lots of bright colored fish in the wild reef area, as well as a very big and scary looking sawtooth fish.

christmas
how quickly christmas always comes and goes!
this year christmas got off to a slow start. patrick got up and ready at a snail's pace. ryan was still at his house sleeping. and i wanted to get things moving. i realized i should appreciate the pokey pace, thinking that in future years i will have kids waking up at 5am wanting to open presents at the crack of dawn ... but i still might have had a mini meltdown that it didn't "feel like" christmas morning.
while piper played in the living room and patrick got prettied up, i started on christmas morning breakfast. i whipped up nana's waffle recipe and a chicken sausage, onion, and kale frittata. i can't believe that at the end of december, we still had usuable kale growing on our balcony. our christmas morning wasn't the only thing off to a slow start around these parts: winter has barely begun in chicago. i'm pretty sure that it will be cold here until june this year to make up for it.
i had everything ready for breakfast, and ryan still wasn't here. we never really agreed upon a time for him to come over. but i couldn't wait any longer, i HAD to open up our envelope from the ultrasound.
so patrick, piper and i gathered together and opened up our surprise! and what a great surprise to open on christmas! soon after, ryan got here. it was already past 1:00pm so we got right down to opening presents.
for what was left of the rest of our day, we lounged around, played with toys and later ordered a pizza. the schedule of the day actually worked out perfectly, i was such a brat to complain!
