norway: bryllup pt 3

after dinner, around 9pm or so, we all went outside again.
the newlyweds!

it was so gorgeous outside!

while the dining room was being cleared for cake and dancing, we were welcomed into the sitting room to enjoy our liquer and coffee!

mari in her traditional bunad.
so adorable.

it was so nice out though, some people stayed outside until the dancing began

six different kinds of cake!!

around 11pm my camera ran out of batteries, but the rest of the evening involved a lot of cake, a lot of dancing, and a lot of fun.  patrick and i actually got tired and went home before my dad and tove did!!! i think they got home at 3am!

norway: bryllup pt. 2

when it was time for dinner, we all came inside and were seated at a beautiful, long table.

tove and my father went around the table and spoke about each person who came.  tove provided the norwegian, and my dad repeated in english.

there's kitty!

we were all seated, the wine started pouring, and the lyrics for songs started flowing.

per tradition, we sang a norwegian song after the appetizer.

The appetizer was a mango and crab salad with a sherry vinaigrette.  It was served with an Italian pinot grigio.  The main course was roasted venison filet in a port wine glaze, with brussel sprouts sauteed with bacon, butter sauteed forest mushrooms and scalloped potatoes.  The main course was served with a cotes du rhone.  Dessert was a passion fruit pannacotta.

piper quite enjoyed the singing

tove's good friend eva, and master of ceremonies, kept the speeches and songs in order.

i think it was after the main course, hans gave a speech.
apparently it was HILARIOUS!!  all the norwegians were dying!
i had to wait for the translation.
(and it was pretty funny)

at the end of the meal, it is norwegian tradition to give a speech thanking the host and hostess for the meal.  this is called "takk for maten."

post all the speeches, songs, our delicious dinner and amazing dessert, the after-dinner liquers were served

that's when things got a little silly.
me, unn (tove's second daughter), ole morten (her husband), patrick on a chair, and arild (ingvild's husband).

norway: and FINALLY, a bryllupsfest!

my dad and tove got married at city hall in june, and the reception was in july which is why we schedule our trip. and it was such a wonderful evening!

we arrived to the venue's courtyard, where we all convened and greeted each other.  we were then guided through the white farmhouse and welcomed onto the patio for a cocktail overlooking the fjord before dinner.

the celebration was held at Kvilhaugen Gård, an old farm

diane, tove, shirley, me, piper, patrick and ulf.
i'm standing next to shirley, who is my late papa's daughter.
when my papa married my nana, my dad was a teenager and shirley was already grown and out of the house.  after years of probably not talking, they both ended up living in irvine. decades later, she now lives in newport coast not far from my dad's old place.  and she made it out to the celebration!

drinks in the evening sun!

ingvild, arild and mari in traditional clothes!

diane and john came from oregon!
diane is my nana's brother bob's daughter, or, my dad's cousin.
