sacro-ili-itis

{thanks dad and katie for your nice - and quick - comments}

overdue post!

back while i was pregnant, i was having really bad low, lower back pain.  i just figured it was part of pregnancy and that it would go away after i delivered zee little bebe

while sleeping, it was hard to turn over, not because of my belly, but because the movements that i made (with my legs really) while doing this put pressure on my lower back in way such that the back of my pelvis would make deep cracking noises and would hurt.  this part wasn't that bad.  the worst part was the first steps after waking up, or first steps after sitting for a long period. these hurt really badly, felt sharp and deep, but it wouldn't take long for the really bad pain to turn into just an annoying throbby ache.

well, after i had the baby, this pain didn't go away. in fact, it just started getting worse, so back to the doctor i went.

turns out that my sacro-iliac joint was falling out of place, and getting inflamed.  it all probably started while i was still pregnant, as hormones started loosening my ligaments and joints (per my complaints above) and then was possibly exacerbated by graham's sunny side up delivery.
and while my left side hurt worse than my right, both were a-hurtin'.

the sacro-iliac joint is where the sacrum (base of the spine) and iliac (back of pelvis) join together, and looks like this:

because this is a big ol' stabilizing joint, it hurt to just walk, and really hurt to PICK UP MY KIDS!! after graham gained a couple pounds, it was too painful to wear him in a wrap or a carrier.  it hurt to pick piper up, but i did anyway.  pushing the stroller wasn't too bad, but it REALLY hurt to turn it. there was a torque thing going on. if we could just go straight forever, it would have been fine!

and since my days on maternity leave consisted of summertime with two kids, there was a lot of stroller pushing, kid lifting, and even in-and-out of the car going on.  not being able to lift my kiddies without pain was making me super sad and frustrated, which is what drove me to the doctor and hence, to PT. not to mention, i really wanted to work out again!

my physical therapist specializes in women's health, and was pregnant herself. she was too chatty at first, but i grew to enjoy our conversations. she'd do some magic and i'd do some exercises, 1-2 times per week. i wasn't supposed to put my feet on the coffee table while breastfeeding -- just a very common position for new mamas -- and sitting cross legged while breastfeeding was an even bigger no-no, because of how it would throw my joints off.  wasn't supposed to push the double stroller, either.

the physical therapy only provided temporary relief until i popped one of the joints back out.  my lower back/back of my pelvis felt like it might accidentally break apart. but as i continued with my exercises to strengthen the surrounding areas, it slowly started to get a little better. i also learned how to kind of pop the joint back in. also, once i went back to work and my milk supply started suffering, the relaxin (hormone) in my system started dwindling too. and this actually helped begin to stabilize the joints, as the original cause was reversing itself.

i read online about this happening to other women during pregnancy, and for some, they didn't fully recover!! i freaked myself out.  my physical therapist said i'd be running again in less than six months, probably sooner, but i wasn't sure whether to believe her!!

during my last session, we did ACUPUNCTURE!  i was pumped, as i'd never had it before. i should have had her take a picture of me! the needles didn't really hurt going in.  then she stimulated some of muscles with little electronic waves through the needles i guess?  and that was so weird.  it was a pulsing sensation. some of the things she did were pretty intense and felt super weird. it did kind of hurt and made me jerk my legs! has anyone else done acupuncture like this before?

at about four months post baby i was almost back to normal.  it's amazing for me that now, picking up piper is painLESS.  i can push and turn the stroller so easily, and can't believe that it could have possibly caused any pain, let alone as much pain as it did. and not only can i walk without notice, even running again seems to be just fine!! it might be slow-going, but i'm so happy to be back out there!  i can hardly remember that my sacro-iliac even ever hurt like it did.

pretty amazing how the body can heal!
plus anyway, little graham was totally worth it!

Warm December!

we usually turn to warm soups and stews in the cooler months, but this december brought chilled salmon salads. this is summer food, folks!

on a warm sunday, we played at the park.  with no socks!!

our neighborhood kicked off the december shopping season with a trolley bussing shoppers from stores on damen to stores on division, and even to the craft fair at pulaski park!

1,000s and 1,000s of motorcycles "ripped" up western avenue for the annual 'toys for tots' toy drive/fundraiser. really, really nice harleys, and fun bigol'teddybearmotorcycledudes (and gals) drove past carry toys on their bikes. piper loved waving to them and they loved waving back.

above: this was an installation at the craft fair
and below: a horrible pic i took at the fair inside the beautiful pulaski park field house.

all graham wanted to do was eat the leaves.
on the trolley. i know she's thinking, "so much cleaner than the CTA!"

"no, don't break it, dad!"
(but actually more interested in her first hot chocolate)

and last, piper instructing her little brother, "No Buddy! don't eat the leaves!!"

Plain ol' stuff

ya sometimes we just walk around with him like this

she loves her daddy!

i don't know what's going on here

pardon the cheese-o filter. this pic landed here because there is a steel mill if you take a shortcut over to lincoln park, and they always are so cheerful and decorate for the holidays. it's like the nicest steel mill ever. not that i know any other steel mills.

nothing in particular, just our tall/long baby inch worming his way around the house.

It's beginning to look kinda like Christmas

Even though the stores downtown put up holiday decor the day after HALLOWEEN, I wasn't ready to recognize that christmas is right around the corner until after thanksgiving.

whoops, this isn't the picture i meant to post, but it's fun in its own candid way too!

patrick and i went to a quick dinner without the kiddos the  night we picked up our christmas tree!

picking up our tree.
times have changed: i went out on a "date" with hair in a pony, glasses, and no make-up!

Thanksgiving

We had originally planned to travel to NY for the holiday, but plans fell through for a couple reasons.

Plan B was to spend turkey day with uncle Ryan and tortilla Wendy* at our place. Not too shabby for a back up plan!

I really wanted to keep it simple this year and therefore proposed the following menu:

1) turkey burgers with cranberry aioli

2) sweet potato fries (ryry makes a mean fry)

3) pumpkin milkshakes

I was so excited about this twist, but totally got outvoted!!! I'm kind of glad I did because we made a full traditional thanksgiving feast and it was a beautifully delicious meal. Those flavors really only come together once a year, and i suppose that's part of the reason this is my favorite holiday!

Piper, still mentioning on a daily basis that "trick or treat is over," was able to muster the strength to say "Happy THANKKKs-giving" to our guests while we pounced on the cheese plate, olives, pickles and beer. And maybe a pretty sparkling brut rose.

Piper still doesn't quite understand how to communicate what she's thankful for, though I presume the list would include: dada, mom mom, graham/baby brother, oatmeal and Halloween...

As for me, I have much to feel grateful for including our immediate and extended family!

*So we (which you know actually means Patrick) are always teasing Wendy about her Salvadoran heritage even though we of course think its awesome, and especially that she was raised bilingual. So a few weeks ago I was trying to get Piper to say Tia Wendy as a nice nod to how we think of Ryan's girlfriend. <~ Tia is aunt in Spanish. Instead of tia, Piper happily belted out: Tor-tilla Wendy!!

Shhh! Sleeping Baby ...

When our buddy fell asleep on my shoulder, I asked Patrick to take a picture because I know these days will soon be very far and few between. Melt my little ol' heart! Who cares about laundry when you've got this little guy on your shoulder?

Check out how little g sleeps in his bassi net: he rolls over to his left and grabs hold of the side with his right hand. He's been doing it since he could roll!

The Bonkos

Oh how we have missed hanging out with the Bonko-viches! They invited us over for some Sunday football. Two chickens, two spinach pies, one Smitten Kitchen book signing, and five hours later, we decided it wasn't even enough time together. We really almost stayed for dinner too!

Graham loved Christine, snuggled right up to her, and even fell asleep on her.

Even though we picked up a snack for Badger from the Fido Truck, and talked all about our big, but nice and gentle friend, Badger the dog, before we got there, Piper was pretty scared of him. When we eventually told Piper that Badger was like a goat, she kind of warmed up to him better. She called him Badger Goat.

Ryan Gets Sworn In

Uncle Ryan passed the Illinois State Bar Exam from July, along with all other prerequisites, and was sworn in on November 1st. Patrick, wendy and I all took the day off work to attend the ceremony. The Supreme Court judges and other attorneys who spoke did a great job, i only teared up twice, and before we knew it, Ryan was official! We celebrated with an awesome lunch at a little spot called publican quality meats. The boys got obscene sausages, and i had a hard time deciding between crab bisque and curries turkey salad. man, all the food was good. I must go back! Congrats Ryan!
